Why did print farm RasPi factory reset?

walked into the shop this morning to find the print farm flashing recovery mode. lost three days of exposure maps on the beds because the sd cards wiped in the reboot. it feels like trying to hold onto a commons and having the infrastructure eat it whole. anyone else fight that fight? or do people actually patch their bootloaders?
